I am pleased to announce that from today, Monday April 1st 2013, Knox Gardens Reserve will be known as the Rhys Marget Reserve. After long consultation with the community Knox City Council's Peter Merton agreed to the combined nomination from Knox Gardens Cricket Club and Knox Football Club, Rhys was one of 3 names submitted by the clubs. Peter said "The council will over the next few years rename all of our reserves after those whose name is synonymous with the facilities. 'Shaping the future' is our theme for 2013 and that is certainly what we are trying to do by recognising the talents and achievements of individuals who are shaping our future."
Rhys is a founding member of both clubs and has played nearly 300 games of cricket club and over 200 games of football, he is the current reserves coach at the football club and has 2 kids that are coming through the ranks at both clubs, ensuring the Marget dynasty will continue. As well as being a life member his cricket record is spectacular with over 8000 runs and whilst captaining the 1st XI also tried his hand at bowling with 250 wickets, plus he is captain in our team of the last 25 years.
Rhys said "Normally they wait until your in a box before before an honour like this, it's great and i'm humbled for such a great facility to be named after myself. It will be a great motivation for me to get back into the 1st XI next season and make a big century at my own ground." He quipped, "Now can we shorten the boundary?" Rhys played almost all games this season, including a couple of games in the 1st XI. He made his highest score of 140 for the 3rds this season and finished 2nd in Team of the Year so clearly still has a lot to offer both clubs.
Phillip Norton, Facilities manager at Knox Council said "Knox Gardens has under gone major improvements in the last 5 years, with summer grass re-surfacing, addition of 3 more nets and a synthetic centre square making it one of the premier ovals in the area. Future plans for the reserve include lights for the main oval and a pavilion for the 2nd oval."
Congratulations Rhys
