1st XI vs Mountain Gate @ Knox Gardens Reserve

Round 6 saw the 1st XI taking on Mountain Gate at Home in another 2day fixture. Again losing the toss on a perfect day to bat Mountain Gate elected to bat on day 1. We got off to the perfect start having them 1/0 off the first over of the day. That continued throughout their innings and before we knew it we had rolled them for 81 before tea on day 1. All the bowlers were extremely disciplined and backed up in the field by the boys and we got the rewards. Wilba was the pick of the bowlers taking 6/41, Zach also continued his good form with the ball taking 3/16 off 11 overs. Having bowled them out before tea we had to go in a face 2 overs before the break. Unfortunately for us the 2 overs were costly and we were 2/5. In what was a crazy day from the bowlers, unfortunately for us the carnage continued after tea with wickets tumbling regularly. At 8/54 we were on the brink of losing what seemed the unlosable match. Lucky for us Matt Young came in and did his thing along with Wilba putting on a 74 run partnership to help us over the line and giving us a 47 run lead going into day 2. Youngy finished with 36 and Wilba 35 not out.

We went into day 2 thinking that we would push hard to try get the outright win and a maximum 10 points. Having been dismissed for 128 late on day 1 we started the day with the ball in hand looking to take 10 wickets and hopefully have a crack at chasing down the remaining runs late in the day. Again things started perfectly having them 1/1 after a couple of overs and then 2/17. To Mountain Gates credit they dug their heels in and had a 50 run partnership but took a lot of time and overs out of the game. Things were looking like they were going to fizzle out into a pretty tame day and outright points were off the cards until Matt Young came on to bowl. Youngy bamboozled the Gators with his off spinners claiming 6/36 off 21 overs and giving us a real sniff of outright victory. Unfortunately, we could only take the 9 wickets for the day and missed out on the 10 points but walk away very satisfied with a percentage boosting victory and another 6 points to lock away in the bank. Wilba again bowled brilliantly with figures off 3/52 off 21 overs giving him a total of 9 wickets for the match.

This win puts us in 5th position on the ladder and only percentage out of the top 4. Next week we have a massive one-day game to finish off the 2016 part of the season. A win next Saturday should see us sitting in the 4 at the Xmas break.

2nd XI vs Mountain Gate @ HV Jones Reserve

After a fantastic win last match we were pretty excited to get out there and push for back to back wins. Talking up my coin tossing ability was a mistake pre-game and inevitably we lost the toss and had to field first. We were greeted with an opening batsman that really looked intent on smashing us to all parts of the ground..... and that's exactly what he did for 10 overs as they raced away to be 0/65 and putting the pressure back on us. For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to bring myself on to bowl and luckily for me Jack Marget removed the danger man the over before after a nervous catch by first gamer in the 2's Anthony 'Nibby' Jongen. After that dismissal we were really able to put the corks on the gators teeth and they were far less terrifying. They limped to the tea break and only added another 49 runs in the next 35 overs before the tea break and we had them 5/114. The old fox Trav Mulder came back on after getting some treatment early and was at his best toying with the batsmen before I took him off as he was far too good. We continued the shutdown job for the rest of the day and they ended up batting out their overs for a below par 9/180 in a very disciplined display from our bowlers with Trav Mulder, Jack Marget and Josh Wylde... ending up with the pick of the figures.

The next week we started the day with in form and cricket loving young batsman Joshy Curnow on his death bed with a sore tummy which meant we were going to be one short and have to bat well to get the points. We started quite well with a 136 run opening partnership between Rhys and Jack Marget before Rhys decided to try and defend a ball that should have cleared the fence and was caught behind for an eventful 76. Newly appointed vice skip Josh Wylde came in and really took his time to dust off the final few runs before leaving the final few runs for Callum O'Connor and Jack to easily claim. We batted on to improve our percentage by about 0.1% which could actually be crucial come the end of the season. We ended up pulling the pin at 2/205 and Jack hitting one more run than the old man which was great for all.

Into the top 4 now with our extremly young side and a big game playing 3rd this week to cement our spot before chrissy.

3rd XI vs Knox Boronia @ Wantirna Secondary College

A few unavailabilities this round saw us selecting Jack Deveson who was only available in Week 1 due to a wedding.  Given this we decided that the best strategy was to try to bowl first to make best use of Devo whilst we had him.  Having played in the same game as him in the match prior in the 2nds I knew he would be a delectable asset, even if he only played half the game.

We won the toss and to the surprise of the opposition they were sent in, Not wasting any time Devo struck early in the with just the 3rd delivery, followed by another in his 2nd.  Devo ripped Knox Boronia Churches apart taking 6/37 from 14.4 bowling through the innings and cliching his 6th as the last wicket, Nikil bowled a fine line and length and took 2/17 from 7, Sam Bakker was tight and got 1/4 from 4.  Devo was a ball magnet at point, managing to picking up a runout too.  KBCCC were rolled for 88 just inside 30 overs.

We had a bat before the tea break, facing around 8 overs.  The Morrison twins were brought together with the score on 7 after losing the wicket of McLean early, with the memo demanding at least 6 dropped catches clearly not arriving at KBCCC headquarters during the week. The Morrison's built their partnership quickly and within 18 overs the target had been passed and a lead was being established.  Another 10 overs later and the boys had put together a fine 170 partnership Dosman had brought up a 50 and Dad was staring down another 100. A mathematical error was discovered after Morro was prematurely elated on the pitch, the book had him on 98 at the drinks break, with the skipper contemplating declaration.  A few balls later and the prospect of 2 centuries in an innings saw Morro attempt to cut a ball on off stump and straight out miss it, out for 99.  Dosman finished with 58*.  2/193 and our lead was 105 with around 40 mins play left.

In the 4th over Devo struck yet again with the score on 17, Lamby chipped in with an LBW next over and Devo struck twice in 3 balls in the 2nd last over of the day. So we finished Day 1 with 6 points, 14 wickets & 193 runs, the whole time being given useful instructions from Pottsy in Singapore via Facebook, appreciated.

On Day 2 Devo joined us for the first hour and wasted no time in picking up his 1st 10 wicket match and 2nd consecutive 5 wicket innings 2 overs later.  There was a noticeable drop in intensity after the 1st hour, possibly due to Devo leaving the ground or Pottsy entering it as substitute fielder.  We threw the ball around a little and the guys shared with remaining 3 wickets.  Pottsy sent a message to the comp picking up a fine run out.  KBCCC were a player short but set us a target of 51 to obtain maximum points.

We gave the lower order batsmen an opportunity, but we conceded more wickets than we would have liked.  Ty contributed a lusty 19 and Morro 16*, with extras making up the majority of the difference.

The final scores  KGCC 2/193 (B Morrison 99, H Morrison 58*) & 4/52 def outright KBCCC 88 (Deveson 6/39, De Silva 2/17) & 154 (Deveson 5/32).  A fantastic result and individual efforts, something we can build on for the rest of the season.

4th XI vs Johnson Park @ Johnson Park

Going into this game in 5th position on the ladder, we rated our chances reasonably highly against an evenly matched opponent in 4th placed Johnson Park.  The only thing going against us was the fact that, despite being in strong positions in each of the past 3 years, I was yet to lead the team to a win against them.  Going in with Thommo for week 1 and Gez for week 2, however, gave me some comfort……..but enough about me, we’re here to win!

Winning the toss with a full team at the start gave us the opportunity to send them in on the unforgiving bowler and fielder’s graveyard of Stud Park Reserve. Crookie opened his account with his 3rd ball having the opener caught at point (1/1 off 0.3). While Crookie and Varun were bowling well, it was felt a change was needed with Dyl coming on to bowl the 8th with a plumb LB decision to open his account from his 3rd ball as well (2/34 from 8.3). Dyl managed to get another favourable LB decision a few overs later leaving us in a reasonable position of having 3 wickets inside 12 overs (3/49).  From that point, it became a bit of an arm wrestle with JP grinding its way to 112 when Raj who had bowled a beautiful spell outside off frustrated the batsman into playing at one that went straight to Scotty in the slip/gully region (4/112 from 25). Tom, having also comfortably settled into his rythym, managed to snare another one soon after (5/116 from 27). The runs really dried up after that with JP getting to 5/137 off their 35, a run rate of less than 4 per over thanks to a great fielding and bowling effort from everybody where the energy remained positive throughout.  A special mention to Varun who killed it in the outfield and bowled extremely well without luck to ‘bookend’ the innings.

Opening the batting with the same opening pair for the first time this season, Scotty and Deepak got us off to a steady start before Deepak (7) was unlucky to be caught in front (1/34 from 9). Thommo joined Scotty and proceeded to tease rather than toy with the JP bowlers and fielders before attempting a typically lusty swipe that unfortunately rattled the stumps to be out for 13 (2/56 from 13).  Benny joined Scotty who had seen off the opening attack and together they added 53 in quick time, occasionally flirting with danger until Benny also had his stumps rattled for 17 (3/109 from 23).  Tony came and went before Justin (25no) and Scotty (87no), again the mainstay of the innings, saw us through to stumps in a strong position with a lead of 36 and only 4 wickets down.

Starting week 2 with an all-out spin attack, we had Gez with his probing flat offies at one end and Tom with his well flighted teasers at the other. As it turned out, they paired up for the first wicket in Tom’s first over with Gez taking a smart catch at short cover (6/143)………and again in Tom’s next over with an even smarter and much sharper catch by Gez in the same position (7/143).  There was then a flurry of big shots from both batsmen obviously sensing an early finish which led to Varun taking an eventually well-judged catch in the deep to give Tom his 3rd wicket of the day (8/170).  Crookie then came on and cleaned up the tail. JP 187 all out with Tom and Crookie taking the honours with 4 and 3 wickets respectively; Dyl got us going early with 2 and Raj and Varun bowled tight spells to keep the pressure on.

Needing another 15 to win and Scotty needing 13 for his 2nd consecutive ton, we managed to get both over the line with the loss of Justin (28) who had batted well but, more importantly, got to invest some time at the crease. This opened the door for another significant milestone - Tom’s first runs for Knox Gardens…….finally!!  So far this season, Scotty has batted 3 times with a 27no coming in week 2 of round 3 and consecutive hundreds opening the innings in the past 2 games.  As he said to the players after the game, success in this game is more about your mindset and concentration than anything else.  Telling his u16s to think about what they’re doing, ignore natural impulses to hit out and think your way through an innings will lead to more success.  You’d have to suggest that there’s a lot of common sense in that with 227 runs ‘not out’ enough proof to back it up.  Success well deserved Scotty - I trust it helps to ease the aches and pains you feel for days afterwards!

KGCC 5/198 (Scotty 100ret; Justin 28; Benny 17; Thommo 13; Tom 4no) def JPCC 187 (Tom 4/56; Crookie 3/29; Dyl 2/29; Raj 1/16)

It was a great team effort in the field with Scotty again providing the backbone to a solid score that now sees us in 4th spot and our season’s destiny firmly in our own hands.  In an extremely competitive grade, there are 8 teams in Div 6 with 6 of them now within 1 win of top spot - game on!!

Great wins by all teams with some brilliant individual efforts that should set up the season for all teams.  Bit of a shame we couldn’t spread the ‘Garden Party’ milestones across several weeks with 3 6-fers, a 100 and a clean sweep all occurring in the same round - unbelievable!
